Degrees that lead to digital forensics work
Many examiners hold a bachelor's or master's in cybersecurity or digital forensics before certifying. See our digital forensics master's ranking and cybersecurity bachelor's ranking. Information security analysts earned a median $129,180 in May 2025, and BLS projects the field to grow 21% from 2025 to 2035.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best digital forensics certification?
It depends on where you work. GCFA and GCFE are widely used in corporate incident response, CFCE and CCE in law enforcement, and EnCE or MCFE where a lab standardizes on EnCase or Magnet AXIOM.
Which forensics certifications include a practical exam?
CCE, CFCE, EnCE and MCFE all include practical work on evidence images; GIAC exams may include hands-on CyberLive questions.
Do I need experience to get a forensics certification?
Requirements vary: EnCE needs 64 hours of approved training or 12 months of forensics work, CCE requires training or 18 months of experience, and CHFI needs two years of security experience unless you take official training.
How long do forensics certifications last?
CCE and MCFE run two years, EnCE, CHFI and CFCE three years, and GIAC certifications four years before renewal.
